The Pursuit of Happyness isn’t a typical rags-to-riches story. This movie is as heartwarming as a mug of chai on a rainy day, but with ten times the struggle. It’s a raw, emotional rollercoaster that throws you into the desperate struggle of Chris Gardner (Will Smith), a father with a dream and a whole lot of bad luck (Would rather call it a sea of bad luck).
The film doesn’t shy away from showing the harsh realities of poverty and homelessness. Chris’s life has hit rock bottom and not just any, we are talking about sleeping-in-a-bathroom-with-his-son rock bottom. The movie doesn’t sugarcoat it – the struggle is real, and it gives you that feeling. But Chris keeps pushing, juggling an unpaid internship with homelessness, all while maintaining a smile that could light up a room, even without electricity (Hats off to that).
The cast delivers a powerful performance with Will Smith portraying Chris Gardner’s unwavering determination mixed with moments of despair that feel both genuine and heartbreaking. And let’s not forget his son, Christopher (played by Jaden Smith, Will Smith’s son). This kid stole the show with his innocence which often times is hilarious amidst the chaos (His acting at times is so brilliant, makes you forget he is a child). The film also shows the unwavering love between a father and son (With some scenes to die for, trust me!)
The film isn’t without its flaws. There are moments that feel a little cheesy or overly sentimental. However, the strong performances and the film’s overall message of hope and perseverance easily outweighs it.
Here’s what really resonated with me:
-
- The power of dreams: Chris Gardner’s pursuit of his dream as a stockbroker, despite the insurmountable odds. It is a reminder that with hard work and determination, anything is possible (So, work hard!)
-
- The importance of fatherhood: The bond between Chris and Christopher is the heart of the film. We see Chris sacrifice everything for his son, and their love for each other is what keeps them going (Reminds you of all the hardships your parents face with a smile)
-
- A celebration of the human spirit: “The Pursuit of Happyness” is ultimately a story of hope. It shows us that even in the face of homelessness and poverty, the human spirit can withstand (Never lose hope!)
So, grab some makhanas, sit on your couch, and prepare to be inspired by a father-son duo who will leave you cheering for their underdog victory. After all, everyone loves watching an underdog win in the end, isn’t it?
